Talks Must Not Fail.
Kenya should be proud to host yet another round of talks among
the armed factions in Somalia. But a nagging doubt lingers over
whether these talks will yield anything more than 13 previous
efforts since 1991 when President Siad Barre was overthrown.October

Cautious optimism as peace talks enter second day.
-More participants on Wednesday joined Somali peace talks
in the western Kenyan town of Eldoret, raising hopes that
the conference could achieve real progress."For the first
time since these meetings have been taking place, we have
virtually everyone together, and this augurs well," Kenya's
Foreign Minister Marsden Madoka told delegates. "Those
who are not yet here are on their way." IRINnews

Change
of heart for Somali warlords.
Four Somali faction leaders have changed their minds and
announced that they will attend the peace talks in Kenya.
The four, who control parts of the capital,Mogadishu,
say they will travel to Eldoret later this week. 16

of State Call for Unity in Somalia.
Four Heads of African states yesterday asked the warring Somali
factions to reconcile and end the 11-year conflict to pave way
for a united country. President Moi of Kenya,
Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, General Omar
Hassan Al Bashir of Sudan and the Prime Minister of
Ethiopia, Meles Zenawi said the peace process
in Somalia could only be achieved through reconciliation by

to Step Up Support If Security Improves.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said
the UN will step up its humanitarian and development assistance
to Somalia if the Somali parties ensure access and the
safety of humanitarian workers. |

Arab
League to send observer to Somali peace talks.
Arab League chief Amr Mussa will send an observer to the
talks opening Tuesday in Kenya aimed at bringing an end
to Somalia's civil war, an official at the pan-Arab organisation
said. The observer will be Omani diplomat Salem bin Mohamed
al-Khusaibi, whom Mussa appointed in May as his special
representative to the east African nation that belongs
to the 22-member Arab League, the official said. |

Looms: Millions More Ethiopians Face Hunger.
The UN World Food Programme on Tuesday
urged an immediate response to head off a massive humanitarian
crisis in Ethiopia because the number of people in need
of food aid is expected to rise sharply from the current
6 million to between 10 to 14 million people next year.
