Somali Talks Must Not Fail.
Kenya should be proud to host yet another round of talks among the armed factions in Somalia. But a nagging doubt lingers over whether these talks will yield anything more than 13 previous efforts since 1991 when President Siad Barre was overthrown.October 17, 2002

SOMALIA: Cautious optimism as peace talks enter second day.
-More participants on Wednesday joined Somali peace talks in the western Kenyan town of Eldoret, raising hopes that the conference could achieve real progress."For the first time since these meetings have been taking place, we have virtually everyone together, and this augurs well," Kenya's Foreign Minister Marsden Madoka told delegates. Change of heart for Somali warlords.
Four Somali faction leaders have changed their minds and announced that they will attend the peace talks in Kenya. The four, who control parts of the capital,Mogadishu, say they will travel to Eldoret later this week. 16 October, 2002
Heads of State Call for Unity in Somalia.
Four Heads of African states yesterday asked the warring Somali factions to reconcile and end the 11-year conflict to pave way for a united country. President Moi of Kenya, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, General Omar Hassan Al Bashir of Sudan and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Meles Zenawi said the peace process in Somalia could only be achieved through reconciliation by the warring groups.October 16, 2002
UN to Step Up Support If Security Improves.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said the UN will step up its humanitarian and development assistance to Somalia if the Somali parties ensure access and the safety of humanitarian workers.
Arab League to send observer to Somali peace talks.
Arab League chief Amr Mussa will send an observer to the talks opening Tuesday in Kenya aimed at bringing an end to Somalia's civil war, an official at the pan-Arab organisation said. The observer will be Omani diplomat Salem bin Mohamed al-Khusaibi, whom Mussa appointed in May as his special representative to the east African nation that belongs to the 22-member Arab League, the official said.
Disaster Looms: Millions More Ethiopians Face Hunger.
The UN World Food Programme on Tuesday urged an immediate response to head off a massive humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia because the number of people in need of food aid is expected to rise sharply from the current 6 million to between 10 to 14 million people next year. Addis Tribune - 11/10/2002

Claus overleden .
Prins Claus is gisteravond om zeven uur overleden. Hij is 76 jaar geworden. De prins stierf met koningin Beatrix en zijn kinderen aan zijn zijde. Zij hadden een groot deel van de dag gewaakt aan zijn ziekbed in het AMC in Amsterdam. Daar lag hij al bijna drie weken zonder te herstellen van de laatste aanslag op zijn gezondheid, een infectie aan de luchtwegen. Uiteindelijk werd dit hem te veel. Balkenende biedt schriftelijk ontslag aan.
DEN HAAG, 17 OKT. Premier Balkenende heeft woensdagavond schriftelijk het ontslag van zijn kabinet aangeboden aan de koningin. Half december of uiterlijk begin januari worden vervroegde Tweede-Kamerverkiezingen gehouden. CDA en VVD hebben aangekondigd dat zij na de verkiezingen samen een coalitie willen vormen.
Opvang asielzoekers ontslaat 2000 mensen
Bij het Centraal Orgaan opvang Asielzoekers (COA) moeten 2000 personeelsleden weg, doordat het aantal asielzoekers snel daalt. De verwachting is dat de opvangcapaciteit eind volgend jaar met de helft is gedaald tot 40000 plaatsen. Over twee jaar moet de operatie zijn afgerond.
NEWS ANALYSIS: DE ZAAK AYAN HERSI ALI

Opvang van asielzoekers gehalveerd.
Het aantal opvangplaatsen voor asielzoekers zal de komende twee jaar halveren. Nu heeft het Centraal Orgaan opvang asielzoekers (COA) nog 80.000 plaatsen, binnen twee jaar moet dat teruggebracht zijn tot 40.000.

Moskee maakt nieuwsgierig
DEVENTER - De nieuwe moskee aan de Smyrnastraat in Deventer stond gistermiddag in het middelpunt van de belangstelling. Nieuwsgierige buurtbewoners maakten massaal gebruik van de gelegenheid om het opvallende gebouw van binnen te bekijken.

RuG-onderzoek: Volwassenen leren vreemde taal nooit zo goed als kind.
Een volwassene zal een nieuwe taal nooit zo goed beheersen als zijn moedertaal. De grammatica van de als kind aangeleerde moedertaal blijft een volledige beheersing van de nieuwe taal altijd in de weg staan. Kinderen daarentegen zijn wel degelijk in staat een vreemde taal als tweede moedertaal aan te leren.

Kritiek op LPF'er Wiersma om extremisme.
LEEUWARDEN - De Friese partijvoorzitter Johan Wiersma uit Roodkerk is een te rechts-extremistische persoon binnen de LPF. Dit stellen zijn partijgenoten ex-minister Herman Heinsbroek en ex-fractievoorzitter Harry Wijnschenk. Hij schreef dat er in Afrika geen voedselprobleem is, omdat daar voldoende bananen in de bomen hangen.
